The First Corporate Tax Return Every Business Gets Wrong (And How to Avoid It)

Every UAE business is now on its second or third Corporate Tax filing cycle. Which means most of us are still learning by trial and error and the errors tend to repeat themselves.

After reviewing filings across mainland, Free Zone, and small business clients, one pattern shows up more than any other: businesses get the tax calculation right, but miss the details around it. Here’s where that actually happens.

Mistake 1: Assuming Free Zone income is automatically tax-free

Qualifying Free Zone Person (QFZP) status isn’t a default setting. It depends on meeting six specific conditions at once, including maintaining real substance in the Free Zone and staying under a strict revenue threshold for non-qualifying income. Businesses that assume 0% applies without checking these conditions often find out too late that it doesn’t.

Mistake 2: Forgetting transfer pricing disclosures

If your business has related-party transactions, intercompany loans, shared services, group billing, these need to be priced at arm’s length and documented. It’s one of the most commonly missed requirements, because it doesn’t show up in a standard profit and loss statement.

Mistake 3: Not electing Small Business Relief

If your revenue is AED 3 million or less, you may qualify for 0% tax under Small Business Relief. But it has to be actively elected in the return. Businesses that don’t know this exists simply miss it, even when they’d otherwise qualify.

Mistake 4: Wrong adjustments from accounting profit to taxable income

Accounting net profit and taxable income are not the same number. Exempt income, non-deductible expenses, and available reliefs all need to be adjusted for, and getting this step wrong changes the entire filing.

The fix is simple: check before you file, not after.

None of these mistakes are complicated once someone points them out. The problem is that most businesses don’t know to look for them until it’s too late.
